Stress and stress-related illnesses are at epidemic levels. Pretty much every person I see in clinic is suffering from some kind of stress – work stress, money stress, relationship stress – and pretty much everyone can benefit from stress-relief practices.

Given how much everyone is stressed-out these days, you’d think we would be really examining our culture and changing the way we do things to take the pressure off and reduce rates of serious illnesses that are worsened by stress. But so far, not many of those necessary changes are happening.

Why is it so difficult to stop stressing?

The tricky thing is that most people’s lives are so hectic and fast-paced that there’s no time to learn new skills for tackling stress, like meditation and mindfulness. Often people get overwhelmed by trying to figure out how to decrease their stress levels – especially if they need to do so for medical reasons.

The need to reduce stress levels just becomes yet another thing to stress about, and before you know it, your mind is running in circles about everything else that needs to get done too. So then it seems to make sense to just get some more work done so you can hopefully feel some relief from crossing some things off your to-do list, but that just keeps you in fight-or-flight mode because the work is endless. This is the vicious cycle of stress.

    What a great idea! Tomorrow I have to go into town to do a lot of shopping, which always exhausts me and winds me up. So I’m going to give myself a break in middle of that and sit down with a coffee and maybe a cake, and watch the world go by for a bit! I’ll let you know how I get on!
