How to Cut Out Sugar Without the Struggle – 3 Steps to a Low Sugar Lifestyle

Have you ever quit sugar – only to break down and go on a binge? I have, and I swore never to put myself through that again, because quitting and bingeing wreaks havoc on our systems.

Instead, I live a low-sugar lifestyle.

What is a low-sugar lifestyle?

A low-sugar lifestyle means that, most of the time, I don’t eat refined sugar. I don’t keep sweet things in the house, and I rarely eat anything that contains refined sugar. But I know from experience that if I’m never allowed it, sooner or later the cravings will build up until I can’t control them (or I’m too miserable to keep trying!) and then it’s binge time.

Avoid the binge at all costs!

But the amazingly cool thing is that it’s not a struggle to eat so little sugar. Because my body isn’t used to eating refined sugar, it actually doesn’t taste good! I genuinely don’t want more than a bite of most high-sugar foods, because they simply don’t taste as satisfying as the real food I’m used to eating. And natural sugars, like fruit-filled smoothies, have become even more delicious! Now that’s a win-win situation if there ever was one.

Why we often fail at quitting sugar

When we have an internal conflict between what we desire and what we think we should do, it can only lead to trouble. Sooner or later we lose the war, because it’s simply not sustainable to deprive ourselves of the food we want all the time. It leads to stress and grumpiness – and that’s not good for our health either!

So if the idea of never tasting chocolate cheesecake again makes you feel like crying, don’t despair! I have a much gentler solution that will help you to eat almost no refined sugar, without feeling deprived and stressed out.

A more sustainable way of quitting sugar

Instead, when I really want sugar, I have it! Of course, with sugar being the horribly addictive substance it is, it takes some conscious awareness. But it’s much easier and more fun than the quitting and bingeing cycle, so follow these 3 easy steps to a low-sugar lifestyle.

3 Steps to a Low-Sugar Lifestyle

When we’re not used to eating refined sugar, natural sugars taste much sweeter and more satisfying.

  1. Commit to massively reducing your sugar intake. Get that stuff out of your house, and draw a line in the sand. I recommend being extremely vigilant about refined sugar for at least 1-2 months.
  2. Give your taste buds time to change. If you’re used to eating refined sugar frequently, it’s more difficult to taste sweetness. When you take a break from sugar, you’ll find that natural sugars taste much sweeter. Stick with it long enough, and you’ll start to find high-sugar foods taste kind of gross. Seriously – if you don’t believe me, try it!
  3. Only eat sugar when you really, really want it, and eat it slowly and mindfully. No stuffing your face in front of the TV! Take a small piece of the food you’re craving and really savour it. It’ll be more satisfying and you’ll end up eating less.

I’ve found this to be a much easier way to cut out sugar, and much more compassionate towards myself, too. It’s all about treating ourselves and our bodies with love, by cutting back on addictive refined sugar to rebalance our taste buds, listening to our bodies, and savouring treats when we really want them.
